------------–---------------------------------------- Tradition lives on through the generations. It is a gift we pass on to one another. To remember is to keep our stories alive.
My friend Jean Denault remembers hearing his aunts and uncles sing these songs from the time he was a young child. They are the songs that make up this album.
Each family had its own version of these traditional songs, passed down through generations by unknown authors. They have endured through the centuries and, in some cases, crossed an ocean. Along the way, they have changed and evolved.
The cultural identities shaped by these traditions continue to grow richer over time. Like layers building upon one another and colours blending together, they form a richly expressive tapestry.
For the arrangements, I let the inspiration of the moment guide me, while keeping in mind the importance of maintaining a sense of continuity in the instrumental textures.
Accordion, guitar, mandolin, percussion and violin are the principal instruments heard throughout this album.
Jean and I have known each other for more than 18 years. This project has been close to our hearts for a long time, and now, at last, we are sharing it with you.
We are proud to be part of a shared history, of a culture our ancestors shaped through generations of hard work and perseverance.
The album cover features a photograph of young Jean Denault turning toward his sister, with several of his aunts gathered nearby. It captures one of those memorable family celebrations where these songs were sung.
